2011 Toyota Prius Overview
Does Toyota Prius have a Variable Sized Fuel Tank?
The Toyota Prius has a flexible bladder fuel tank. This is to reduce the empty space in the tank and reduce the fumes (EPA requires fumes to be burned). What owners are discovering is that during cold weather, they are not be able to fill the tank to the full 11.9 gallons, because the bladder is less flexible. Dealers have told people to simply wait and the bladder will expand and they can put more gas in the tank. Some owners still say this is not true and to get used to smaller tank during the Winter. It is highly recommended to refill the tank when only 1/4 full so you don't run out. Not all is lost if you do run out of gas, as some owners have reported that after they did run out of gas, they were able to go an additional mile or two on the remaining electric power to reach the gas station - can't do that in a gas-only vehicle.
Prius Power Modes
There are three power modes for operating the Prius.
- EV (electric vehicle only) mode - has a sensitive accelerator pedal for electric vehicle use for short distances only (up to half a mile).
- Economy mode - increases sensitivity of the gas pedal to increase economy.
- Power mode - further increases sensitivity for more acceleration response.
- Normal mode, - automatic balance between economy and power
Prius V to be released for Summer 2011. It will be the family car of the Prius Family, with 50% more cargo room. Toyota to release the Plug-in Hybrid and Prius C models in 2012. The C model will be a smaller higher gas mileage version, and the plug-in option will insure that the Prius leaves home with a fully charged battery, so the gas engine will be used less especially for short trips.
